Newspaper review: Trump pulls off greatest upset ever as judges face trial

Nigerian Newspapers on Wednesday, November 9, have focused on the just concluded US election which saw Donald Trump emerge winner, amongst other top stories.

According to a report on The Punch, Republican Donald Trump turned the form book by jumping to an early lead over the pre-election favourite, Democrat Hillary Clinton, in the highly-contested US presidential election, he eventually won the election.

Emerging from America’s most turbulent presidential election campaign, Trump won most of the swing states, where the Democrats built their electoral advantages in the last two presidential polls, suggesting that a lot of US voters supported the controversial businessman in Tuesday’s voting.

Moving on, Vanguard reports that the federal government on Tuesday, November 8, brought a nine-count charge of money laundering and corruption against a Supreme Court judge, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta.

Also a top official of the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the amended charges against Justices John Inyang Okoro, Ademola Adeniyi and others would be filed today, November 9.

Justice Ngwuta, his colleague, Justice Inyang Okoro and five other federal justices had been suspended on allegation of fraud, after a ‘sting operation’ by operatives of the Department of State Services between October 7 and October  8. Large sums of money were allegedly discovered.

The charge filed in the Federal High Court, Abuja, alleged that Ngwuta illegally retained in his possession N35, 358, 000.00 contrary to the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011. It was also alleged that the defendant retained in his possession $319,596.00 and £25, 915.

Away from the anti-corruption war, six state governors accompanied by Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Tuesday, November 8, met with the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, demanding the release of accumulated Ecological Fund, Tribune reports.

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Zamfara State governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, who spoke with reporters at the end of the meeting, said most of the states were currently facing environmental challenges and, as such, could not continue to wait when there was a fund that could be used to address the problem.
